Our Name

Named for the river that built this city.

In July 1669, French explorers navigated the region's great waterway alongside the local Mingo people, adopting their word Ohi:yo’, meaning “good” or “great river,” and phoneticizing it in French as Oyo. Just as Steubenville's original growth was forged by the flow of the river, Oyo Brewing Co. is being built for the good people who call the region home today.

Oyo Brewing Company is a transformative hospitality and manufacturing development anchoring the historic downtown corridor of Steubenville, Ohio. By creating a premier commercial production footprint and destination taproom, Oyo fills a severe market gap for a professional production brewery in the Ohio Valley.

Every part of the project — from the taproom to the production floor — is being built to catalyze economic growth, drive sustainable downtown foot traffic, and foster a welcoming, inclusive “gathering place” for local residents, downtown workers, and incoming professionals alike in the heart of the Ohio Valley.

The Founder

A Story That Winds Like the Oyo Itself

Andrew and Audra Sharples' story began at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where two college students from opposite coasts found a common path. Surrounded by Milwaukee's legendary craft beer scene, the couple formed a shared philosophy: a great taproom isn't simply a “bar” but a vital community gathering place.

After college, Audra's service as a U.S. Navy nurse brought them to Washington, D.C., where the pandemic lockdowns hit shortly after their arrival. In a time marked by distance, local open-air breweries offered an invaluable sense of normalcy and togetherness. As their family grew, breweries remained welcoming, family-friendly places to meet friends and spend time together. Breweries were becoming such a staple for this family that anytime Andrew picked a place to “eat” during their travels, Audra knew to immediately ask, “Which brewery are we going to?”

After Audra left the service, the family searched for the perfect community to raise their children, which led them straight to the Ohio Valley. After falling in love with the area and spending a few years putting down deep roots, Andrew and Audra noticed a glaring void: the Valley was missing a central, neutral gathering space for the entire community.

Driven to fill that gap, the idea for a Steubenville-based brewery was born in late 2025. Following many months of scouting locations, conducting structural and historic analyses, and working with local stakeholders, the dream of many is finally becoming a reality. Oyo Brewing Co. has secured its footprint to bring the city its first brewery since Prohibition.

A two-story structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places, being fully upgraded to meet 40-year building standards.

First Floor — The Taproom

A high-capacity, open-concept taproom with expansive street-level views at 4th & Market, expanded restroom infrastructure, and a dedicated food-service footprint with a fully rebuilt commercial kitchen — currently in lease negotiations with a reputable restaurant to bring quality dining back downtown.

Second Floor — The Entertainment Hub

A dynamic cultural and event space with a main stage positioned for street-level visibility, a flexible function area for live events and private rentals (showers, dances, corporate events), German Beer Hall style seating, indoor games, and a family-friendly self-service arcade.

Next door to the taproom, this is the working heart of Oyo — a professional-grade production brewery built to supply the taproom and the Ohio Valley beyond it, paired with an inviting outdoor patio that extends the downtown gathering space into the open air.

A dedicated commercial production footprint — the kind of professional brewing capacity the region has been missing — designed to anchor Oyo's growth for years to come.

An open air beer garden will be laid that is fully enclosed and will house outdoor entertainment, live music, outdoor games, sports and movie projections, dining and more in a part of the downtown that lacks communal spaces for the people of the Valley.
